Lady Mayoress raises $10,000 to fight women’s cancers

Parramatta residents have thrown their support behind Lady Mayoress Kirsty Lloyd’s fundraiser for Pink Ribbon Day, with an impressive $10,000 being raised to support prevention programs, patient services and vital research for women’s cancers. 

Kirsty and a dedicated team raised the impressive total through the sale of raffle tickets, merchandise and cupcakes, a morning tea and an inaugural Pink Ribbon Ladies Night Out, held on Monday 27 October at Event Cinemas Parramatta. 

The Lady Mayoress and Lord Mayor of Parramatta Cr Scott Lloyd presented a cheque of $10,000 to the Cancer Council NSW on Wednesday 5 November.

“I am amazed by the continued generosity and caring spirit shown by the people of Parramatta in supporting Pink Ribbon Day. The Ladies Night Out fundraiser had up to 130 people in attendance for the special screening of Gone Girl, which is a great result,” said Kirsty. 

“It was fantastic to hear from Crystal Huynh of the Cancer Council Pink Ribbon Project and Professor Nirmala Pathamanathan of Westmead Breast Cancer Institute, who spoke on the night. 

“There are many people who were involved in this year’s fundraising success who deserve thanks. I couldn’t have done this without the outstanding help I received from Council staff, Councillors and local businesses.”

Local businesses and organisations donated gift vouchers, cupcakes, and theatre tickets for the raffle and prizes.

“Most of us have been touched by breast cancer, either personally or through the experience of our family and friends,” said Kirsty, whose family can relate to the impacts of this disease, as her mother-in-law is a breast cancer survivor.

“I feel is it this personal connection that inspires the community to come out in support of Pink Ribbon Day.”

Breast cancer is the most common women's cancer in NSW and 1 in 8 women will be diagnosed before they are 85.

“While Pink Ribbon Day is now behind us I encourage women to perform regular breast checks, be proactive with their health and support the many women and families who continue to be affected by these cancers,” said Kirsty.

Launch of the Big Exo Day 2011

On Saturday 17 September 2011 I launched the 2011 Big Exo Day at Parramatta Park in front of a crowd of 10,000.

The Big Exo Day is a one day festival with thousands of young people in one place promoting a message of encouragement to the youth of today; that no matter what they might be dealing with in life and no matter how hard things might be, life can still be EXO (excellent).

Since starting in 2002 the event has grown every year, and this year is no exception, having moved to a new location in Parramatta Park to accommodate the increased ticket demand.

The experience delivers the ultimate combination of international and local music artists; atmosphere, celebration and creativity. It includes rock, hardcore, electro, dance, hip-hop and urban, indie and folk artist performances all in a safe drug and alcohol free environment.

Topped with extreme sport and skate demonstrations, visual and performing arts, and inspiring speeches.

The Big Exo Day is the largest youth Drug and Alcohol free event in Australia.

The City to Surf is fast approaching and training has started.

Ban on All brothels and Sex related services as a land use in the Parramatta LGA.

Parramatta City Councillors voted 9 to 5 to ban all brothels and sex related services as a land use in the Parramatta LGA.
Clr Lloyd moved the motion in tonight’s meeting as away to give power back to the residents.
“The residents do not wish to have brothels in their suburbs and city. The state govern has placed Sex service premises in the LEP frame work. ” Said Clr Lloyd
Clr Lloyd dismissed the Labor Party’s support in debate for brothels in the Parramatta area saying “Councillors work in the public interest and the public has an interest in this issue and they do not want brothels in Parramatta. Clr Lloyd wants to see a more family friendly LGA “
Clr Lloyd’s also moved for the NSW state government and local MP's be asked to support this PCC LEP submission.

Action Day Tackles Local Graffiti

State Members of Parliament and Parramatta City councillor’s teamed up with local residents to combat graffiti in Toongabbie.

Toongabbie’s McCoy Park was the focus in Parramatta for the Graffiti Action Day 2010, the Toongabbie site was just one of hundreds across NSW.

Local residents were encouraged to join in the clean up campaign with free brushes and paint being offered to improve the aesthetics of the residential area.

“The graffiti on the fences along the walking track looks disgusting and unsightly, we have visitors from other areas using our bike track and this is the welcome they receive, a wall of filth. Councillor Lloyd said.”

“This event brought the community together with the common goal of cleaning up the criminals marks off our local suburb. It was so encouraging to see so much graffiti painted away and cleaned off in a short period of time. Said Councillor Lloyd

“Graffiti removal kits are available from Parramatta City Council & I also urge residents to report graffiti to crime stoppers on 1800 333 000 said Councillor Lloyd”

Councillor Lloyd was joined by fellow ward Councillors Bide & Barber, Deputy Lord Mayor Clr Chiang Lim & Clr McDermott.

The area around McCoy Park was selected as the main site for Graffiti Action Day in the Parramatta area after a call for nominations by Keep Australia Beautiful NSW. Local residents in the most graffiti hit streets adjoining the park will have been contacted with the offer of equipment to help with any further clean up.

Graffiti Action Day was a joint initiative between Parramatta City Council Keep Australia Beautiful NSW, and the Department of Justice and Attorney General.

Australia Day 2010

Parramatta kicked off the Australia Day celebrations in Sydney with a magnificent hot air balloon display. Thousands of early starters (including myself) entered the park from 5.30am to admire the balloons slowly rise into the sky.

The hot air balloons were just the start of 15 hours of family entertainment at Parramatta Park.

The Village Hub kept the whole family entertained for hours with a huge range of rides and amusements, and even skate board and bike ramp demonstrations. The free live music and entertainment was great as well as a wide range of food and wines to choose from.

The night time concert was an outstanding show of Australian talent with performances from Justine Clarke, The Robertson Brothers & Jessica Mauboy.

The night concluded with a 20 minute Fireworks display at 9pm.

Parramatta showed once again it is the best place to host major events in Sydney.
